Texas Summer & Native Landscaping

Texas Summer & Native Landscaping

In preparation for a busy Fall season here at The Cedars Ranch, we've been doing some additional landscaping and maintenance work here on our 20 acres. With our first weddings and special events right around the corner, we're looking forward to sharing this little piece of Texas Hill Country heaven with all our guests and visitors over the next few months.

Work here at The Cedars Ranch the past few weeks has been a fun family affair! Big thanks to Bill's son Billy, niece Whitney and her partner Will for coming out from nearby Austin and helping us with a whole lot of hands-on work! (And yes, that's a Bill, Billy and Will sitting on the bench ... !!)

One of the many tasks was sanding and prepping our live-edge cedar benches. We have 40 of these gorgeous 8 foot benches, but they needed some attention. We include these in our wedding rental fee (causing great savings for our wedding couples), and they provide enough ceremony seating for 150 guests. Here they are after Whitney re-sanded and coated them ...

It has been such a joy planting new plants and grasses around the ranch too. Eager to continue promoting local biodiversity and conserving valuable water supplies, we've been planting native species that thrive in this beautiful part of the world. While Bill and I are not local species ourselves (!), we love learning about plants native to Texas. To find about more, read one of our previous blog posts "Why Native Plants Matter".

Plant: Ocotillo

Plant: Agave

Plant: Maiden Grass

While I love the Texan Summer heat, I did manage to find my “too hot” when working outside planting our new grasses! ("Feels like" 42 degrees celsius = 107 degrees fahrenheit!!).

Meanwhile in the garden, the butterflies were having no problems with the heat!

Enjoy your Summer, wherever you may be!

Until next time,
