Hi. Brenda Ryan here, The Cedars Ranch operations and sustainability manager. I'm really happy to be writing this blogpost, and sharing with you all this week.
Most of the time I work for The Cedars Ranch from my home office in South Austin. For that reason, it is always such a wonderful pleasure to venture out to the Texas Hill Country nearby, and visit the ranch - touch base with the place where all the magic is happening! Last week was one such lucky week.
I always breathe a deep sign of relief when stepping onto the land. I exit the car and it's suddenly ... quiet ... peaceful ... spacious. Delicate birdsong emerges from the warm still air. In these moments I remember how blessed I am to be working on this inspiring project. That I have the honor and privilege of spending time here, and being part of the team bringing the dream of this eco-conscious wedding venue and wellness retreat to life. Facilitating others to celebrate, heal, grow, in the best of environments.
I hadn't been on-site since the great hall foundation was being prepared in March, so this was my first time seeing the hall structure in person. Stepping into the great hall for the first time, I seriously got goosebumps all over. As I stepped under those gorgeous big wooden trusses and into the heart of the future dance floor, I felt the start of something truly wonderful. It was as if, all at once, I could see the vast array of weddings, celebrations, speakers and special events that are all to come.
The space is so gorgeous and wonderfully majestic, even in it's unfinished state.
Here (below) is a view facing the front of the great hall, standing on what will be the future tree-lined outdoor reception plaza.
It makes an Irish girl very happy to be living and working under these gorgeous Texan clear blue skies. Whether from Massachusetts (Bill), Canada (Marilyn) or Ireland (me) - we know it is a true gift to be part of the unfolding story of this beautiful piece of Texas Hill Country heaven.
Perhaps you're wondering how an Irish girl ends up working for The Cedars Ranch in the Texas Hill Country! Well I met Marilyn and Bill in 2015. I had moved to the States from Ireland 3 years earlier, to be with my husband in Austin. With a background as an environmental researcher and Masters in Sustainable Development, I initially searched for environmentally-based work when I moved. However, my heart wasn't in it - feeling jaded from my old work life of the hum drum office 9-5, working with faceless businesses and writing uninspiring reports. I realized I wanted something different, something more flexible, and to work directly with people in a more meaningful way. That answer came in the form of a professional organizing business.
In March 2015, Marilyn Orr became one of my organizing clients. I worked with her in her home office and helped with her executive coaching business. It was a fun match straight away! Our time together always involved much laughing. Within months of us working together, Marilyn and Bill shared their dream of a "green" / "sustainable" Hill Country wellness retreat and wedding venue with me. I nodded enthusiastically, and after a lull in their sharing, I looked at them and said - "You read my resume, right?" Blank stares back at me. "You know I have a Master's degree in Sustainable Development?" They didn't! We all felt at that moment that there was something bigger going on here. Perfect synchronicities with wonderful sprinklings of "meant-to-be"! So here I am!
Marilyn, Bill and I are still laughing today! Every meeting we have together is always filled with some kind of fun and joy (as well as awesome productivity and plenty cups of Irish tea!). I'm so happy to be on this wonderful adventure with them, and on this adventure with all of you as you follow us each week.
Until next time,
