Workshops & Speakers

Afternoon Workshop: The Power of Self-Compassion

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Kristin Neff

Self-compassion involves treating ourselves kindly, like we would a good friend we cared about. Rather than continually judging and evaluating ourselves, self-compassion involves generating kindness toward ourselves as imperfect humans and learning to be present with the inevitable struggles of life with greater ease. It motivates us to make needed changes in our lives not because we’re worthless or inadequate, but because we care about ourselves and want to lessen our suffering. This workshop will provide simple tools for responding in a kind, compassionate way whenever we are experiencing painful emotions. We all want to avoid pain but letting it in—and responding compassionately to our own imperfections without harsh self-condemnation—are essential steps toward living happier, more fulfilling lives. Through discussion and experiential exercises, you will gain practical skills to help bring self-compassion into your daily life. You will learn how to stop being so hard on yourself; motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism; and how to care for others without losing yourself. This course is relevant for the general public as well as to practicing mental health professionals. All workshop attendees with receive a copy of Dr. Neff's newly published The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook.

Speaker Bio: Neff is currently an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, conducting the first empirical studies on self-compassion over a decade ago. In addition to writing numerous academic articles and book chapters on the topic, she is author of the book Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself, released by William Morrow. In conjunction with her colleague Dr. Chris Germer, she has developed an empirically supported eight-week training program called Mindful Self-Compassion, which is taught by thousands of teachers worldwide, and the Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook is now available by Guilford.

Speaker: Marilyn Orr

A Practical Approach to Everyday Resiliency will be an interactive morning workshop with coach and author Marilyn Orr. Marilyn is an executive and leadership coach with Capacity Building Coaching and co-owner of The Cedars Ranch. Participants will receive a copy of her resiliency workbook “How Absorbent Are Your Shocks?”, with her workshop focusing specifically on exercises that increase our resiliency from an emotional perspective.

Speaker Bio: Marilyn Orr, MA, CEC, PCC, is an Executive and Leadership Coach with Capacity Building Coaching, holding her Professional Certified Coach designation with the International Coach Federation (ICF). For the past 14 years Marilyn has supported the growth and transformation of thousands of individuals and a large number of organizations across the United States and Canada. Neil’s style is warm and exceedingly practical. Participants will leave equipped with the tools to harness the power of the present moment, and be able to incorporate meditation into their daily lives regardless of where they were beforehand.

Research Snapshot

Why Support the Cultivation of Self-Compassion?

Dozens of studies over the last decade have demonstrated that self-compassion, a way of relating to ourselves in times of suffering that is characterized by increased kindness, reduced self-judgment, increased sense of common humanity, and less isolation, is one of the most important building blocks of psychological well-being.

In just the last five years, science has shown that self-compassion is an important source of strength and resilience when faced with life stressors such as divorce1, combat trauma, parenting an autistic spectrum child3, transitioning to college4, chronic health issues5,adolescent peer victimization/bullying6, and body image and disordered eating7.
